Senior Lecturer

Dr Ciara Glasheen-Artem was appointed Head of the Cork School of Music at Munster Technological University in September 2021, having first joined the School as Conservatoire Coordinator and Lecturer in Oboe in 2017. In this role she has worked with academic, administrative, technical, and library staff to support more than 3,000 students across full-time and part-time programmes.

She studied at the Cork School of Music and the University of Limerick before moving to the United States as a Fulbright Scholar to complete a Master’s and Doctorate at the University of Colorado Boulder. During her time there, she taught as a Lead Graduate Teacher and received the university’s “Best Should Teach” awards in 2014 and 2015.

As a professional oboist, Ciara has performed with ensembles including the Colorado Symphony, Boulder Chamber Orchestra, Camerata Ireland and currently performs with the Cork Opera House Concert Orchestra. She has appeared internationally in venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Royal Opera Versailles, and Mumbai’s National Centre for the Performing Arts.

Within MTU, she has developed projects to widen access to music education and performance including side-by-side projects, and partnerships with external stakeholders such as “Music at Midday” with Crawford Art Gallery. She has created initiatives that bring hundreds of school students into contact with the School each year and continues to increase undergraduate student numbers year on year.

Ciara’s research interests include critical editing, performance practice, curriculum innovation and pedagogical development, as well as music theory. She has received funding for projects in Ireland, the UK and the US through the Fulbright Programme, the Arts Council of Ireland, the Martin Musical Fund, Erasmus+, and the Robert R. Fink Foundation.

In addition to her role at MTU, she serves on the Board of Directors of Cork Opera House.
