Lecturer in Trumpet
Darren Moore is one of very few musicians performing on modern and historical trumpet with some of the finest ensembles in the world. Having grown up playing trad jazz, one of his main goals has always been to make music sound like it is not written down, regardless of the instrument or the composer.
Using Wynton Marsalis as a role model he aims to make music both enjoyable and a force for social good, and is therefore delighted to have been appointed Assistant Lecturer of Trumpet at the Cork School of Music. Darren is an award-winning workshop leader, has previously been Assistant Lecturer at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, and continues to play a role in the wonderful Multistory Orchestra who showcase and sustain the undernourished talents of school children in southeast London.
In recent years Darren has played on various recordings and broadcasts such as the Beethoven Symphonies with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe (dir. Yannick Nezet-Seguin), the BBC Philharmonic's televised performance at the BBC Proms, and the critically acclaimed CD Passages by Ensemble InAlto. He has performed across Europe and the USA with Sir John Eliot Gardiner, toured Germany with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and played at the Luzern Festival under Bernard Haitink.
Since moving to Dublin he has been guest principal trumpet with the National Symphony Orchestra for Mahler's Symphony No. 5, appeared as soloist in Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 with both the Irish Baroque Orchestra (dir. Peter Whelan) and the London Handel Orchestra, and he was the Artist-in-Residence at the Lexicon Theatre in Dun Laoghaire.
In addition to studying with many great teachers at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, the Royal Academy of Music (London), and the Brussels Royal Conservatoire, Darren has played in masterclasses by Alison Balsom, Håkan Hardenberger, Eric Aubier, Reinhold Friedrich, Philip Smith, and Matthias Hofs. He first learned to play the trumpet in Kent Music School before studying with Tom Rainer.
Thanks to hard work, lovely colleagues, and a large dose of good fortune Darren enjoys an exciting career that already involves recording at the moonlit Palace of Versailles, samba dancing on stage with Sir Mark Rylance (The BFG, Dunkirk, Bridge of Spies), and performing at the International Bamboo Organ Festival in the Philippines where he nearly stepped on a reticulated python.
