Sam Perkin has composed for leading orchestras, ensembles and soloists such as The Irish Chamber Orchestra, The Fidelio Trio and Miranda Cuckson. The extent to which Sam likes to explore the boundless possibilities of music can be seen in his recent compositions for Orchestra with Whale Sounds, Orchestra with Sign Language, and Strings with Body Percussion.

He is a BMus graduate of CIT Cork School of Music and subsequently, of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Lyon in France, where he won the prestigious Prix Salabert for Composition,

He has been commissioned by The Irish Chamber Orchestra, The Vanbrugh String Quartet, The Fidelio Trio, Finghin Collins, New Ross Piano Festival, Cork Orchestral Society, Gregynog Festival, The Irish Association of Youth Orchestras, Co-Orch Orchestra Dublin, ConCorda Chamber Music, Ortús Chamber Music Festival and West Cork Chamber Music Festival.

In his Violin Concerto “Voice”, a moment of audience humming creates an aura like none other for the final cadenza, and his recent work Pause blends the sounds of a slowed-down Irish fiddle with String Orchestra. Brother for Solo Marimba and Voices in 6 Languages had its première in Lyon at Festival La Ferme du Vinatier and Festival Les Nuits Sonores.

Recent commissions include Language for solo violin for American violinist Miranda Cuckson for The 2017 West Cork Chamber Music Festival,  for percussionist and string orchestra for Alex Petcu and The Irish Chamber Orchestra, and a large-scale work for Crash Ensemble which blends the worlds of contemporary music and street skateboarding for performance in 2018.
