Conservatoire Applications FAQ
Do you have questions about applying for any of our instrumental lessons, musicianship classes, vocal lessons, speech & drama lessons, choirs and performing ensembles? Check out the FAQ's below.
If you still have questions, please contact conservatoire@mtu.ie but please note during applicaiton season, our adminstration team are extremely busy and may take some time to get back.
How do I apply?
We use a system called Classter to manage our database and class registrations. You will need to create a profile with Classter and then use that login to access your applications. The information you submit in this application is the information we will use to contact you. To see our application guides, visit this page.
I have set up my profile on Classter, should I receive a confirmation email?
Yes. You should receive an email that asks you to verify your account. Your account is not active until you complete this step. Please check your spam/junk folder if you have not received this email. If it is still not there, please email conservatoire@mtu.ie about this.
Can I apply for more than one instrument?
Yes, you can apply for up to three separate instruments however, beginners can only take on one instrument in their first year, provided that they have completed the relevant musicianship programe. When submitting applications for more than one instrument, apply in order of preference from most preferred to least.
Do I need to take a musicianship class at the same time as an instrumental class?
It is CSM policy that all primary school-age instrumental students must attend an appropriate Musicianship class (excluding Organ, Harpsichord, Speech & Drama and Voice). For beginners (those who have never played an instrument before) only students who have successfully completed the first year of the school’s mainstream Musicianship course may apply as beginners for individual instrumental tuition. For older children and non beginners, the student will be assessed and will be placed in an appropriate class that matches their level.
My child has been accepted for an instrumental lesson, what is the cost of this?
The price schedule can be found on our fees page here.
Individual Lessons (Instrumental and Voice)
- 30 minutes per week - €365 per term
- 45 minutes per week - €485 per term
- 60 minutes per week - €605 per term
The website says that my child's lesson costs €365 per term. How many terms are in the year?
There are two terms in the academic year. Payment is requested at the start of each term. For example, the total cost of a 30-min lesson for the academic year is €730, split over two payments.
I made a mistake on my application, or want to change what I applied for.
It's best to contact us via conservatoire@mtu.ie and we will amend the details for you. This is especially important if this application is for a place in one of our musicianship classes as places are offered in order of application date. Please note, if you delete an application and submit a new one, applications will be counted from the second application.
I haven't received any correspondence back about my application, when will we hear back?
The application window is open between March and June for our Musicianship (except Kindermusic which is open in August) and Individual lessons. Teachers will finish their academic lessons here in the school in June, and will then turn their attention to contacting applicants and arranging audition dates (individual instrument lessons, choirs and ensembles) and an assessment for certain musicianship classes.
For Musicianship applications we aim to notify all successful applicants in early August, and will give those who have been contacted a few weeks to confirm or reject the place that has been offered, and we will then go back to our applications to try and fill what places have not been taken. Once the classes are full, we will let the remaining applicants know.
When will the auditions be?
For Instrument applicants, we will organise the auditions to take place during the summer months, and once they have been completed, we should be confirming places in August/September based on the places available and uptake.
If my application is unsuccessful, will I be put on a waiting list for next year?
No, we do not carry over waiting lists from year to year. Unsuccessful applicants are advised to apply again once the applications open the year after (usually in March) for enrolment in the following academic year (September).
Should you not be offered a place in the initial round of offers, and if you have received a notice that places have been filled, we will also advise that we have put all applications on standby for any places that become available in September and October/November. After this time, applicants should assume that no more places will arise.
