MT937 BA in Popular Music APPLICANT ASSESSMENT 2022
Candidates for entry to the BA in Popular Music 2022 will be assessed through a combination of video audition and in-person entrance tests. The in-person audition elements will take place on Saturday April 9th in MTU Cork School of Music. Detailed schedule and specific times for these dates to follow.
- Candidates will sit a one-hour entrance test paper in person. A sample paper can be accessed here.
- Candidates will also have a short individual aural and sight-reading test on the day.
- Performance videos should be submitted via the online form below by Friday April 8th at 5pm as per the instructions below.
VIDEO INSTRUCTIONS
- Due to the size of the audition videos we cannot accept these directly, please upload yours as 'unlisted' individual files or a single playlist to YouTube and submit links via the online form below. Email csm.fulltimecoursescork@mtu.ie if you have any queries or problems with the video upload.
- Smartphone video is fine provided both the video and - particularly - audio are of a reasonable quality.
- All candidates should begin their videos by speaking - to the camera - their full names and CAO numbers
- Before performing each piece the candidate should speak again to camera introducing the work with a title and composer (if known)
- Each candidate should submit 8 to 10 minutes of video - approximately - quality trumps quantity.
- Bass Guitarists should perform 2 or 3 contrasting pieces - introduce the title and the original artist
- Drummers should perform 2 or 3 contrasting pieces, demonstrating their musical strengths and interests
- Electric Guitarists should perform 2 contrasting songs or instrumentals demonstrating 'Rhythm' and 'Lead' techniques. Also a 2 octave scale of G major and a GMaj7 arpeggio
- Keyboardists should perform 2 contrasting pieces, also 2 own-choice major scales for 2 octaves, hands-together. Choose two notes and, using them as the roots, play Major 7th, Dominant 7th, and Minor 7th chords
- Vocalists should perform two contrasting songs, also, using any vowel, sing a major scale and its arpeggio. You may perform one original song and one contrasting cover or two cover versions.
- Performances may be unaccompanied, have live accompaniment, or have backing tracks.
